Shedding SkinMy tepidness melts away—
exposing the inferno crammed in my ribcage—
a time bomb, waiting.

1943What life has taught me—
“Nevermore,” it says now—
as I dare the tactile truth before me:
a martyr, dressed in hope’s hues—
a hero, with bloodied hands—
the forgotten shall rise—
a phoenix who flew wingless men—
a lonely heart, clutching—
the very corners of a memory—
come, face metal machines—
“Yessir”—
a nimble blindness—
just shadows from an era—
an era beyond my memory.

An unfortunate truth:That perhaps desperation sets in
at the very dawn of all despairs—
when denial has stripped every leaf
from every bough—
choked tears from every tree stumps’ rings—
and has left a frigid silence on its tomb.
In solitude, there is the breaking and ripping
and tearing and chipping of bark.
The agony it strikes right into the very heart
and soul that is existence,
turns to ash. A breeze—
it comes on weary boots,
and leaves nothing behind in its wake.
The unlucky linger so silently
their bodies are screaming and writhing,
and who can stop them?
Their mouths must be smothered,
but they are too busy clawing with branches—
branches so dried out they are numb…
but they must get out.
An unfortunate truth.

CallousI can smell the gas for hours after you are gone.
The stale air wafting through
that wooden door, with the broken hinge,
stings the hound’s eyes.
He rolls over in a heavy heat—
a sigh—
deeper than the graves,
escapes soggy lips.
A simple mind beckons
to chase after your cigarette—
though,
you have vanished…
a blur of trees and thunder.
A head with too many years on it—
it perks up:
the grating of knuckles on that broken hinge?
No,
just a stray branch
trying so desperately to get inside,
without any reason at all.
I can smell the gas for hours after you are gone.
